The Rev. Charles W. (Sandy) Rex III, Deacon
The Rev. Charles W. (Sandy) Rex III, a native of Orlando, Florida, has resided in the Chicago area for over 20 years. He is a life-long Episcopalian and has been very involved as lay person in church programs and diocesan leadership
Having received his BA in economics from the Virginia Military Institute, Sandy has been a real estate appraiser specializing in the valuation of corridors and railroads, as well as conservation easements. He owns his own company, RMI Midwest, and lives with his wife Susan and youngest son Nick in Evanston.
Sandy was ordained to the vocational diaconate in February 2009 and spent his first year as deacon at Church of Our Saviour in Lincoln Park, his home parish since arriving in Chicago.
Sandy’s call has been predominantly to the ministry to the homeless. He is a founding member of Chicago Urban Ministry and Life Intervention (CUMALI), which serves the entrenched homeless throughout the city and particularly on Lower Wacker Drive. He is also a volunteer outreach minister with the Night Ministry. Here at the Cathedral, he participates in Just Meals and the third Sunday breakfast program.
As a deacon, Sandy is responsible for bringing to the attention of the church the needs and concerns of the world, as well as helping parishioners address these needs through their participation in helping ministries and through his symbolically showing forth this servant call during the Eucharist and proclamation of the Gospel.
Sandy has three grown children and is the proud grandfather of Caden, Isabelle, Connor, and Matilda.
