“EVIL, SEXUALITY AND DISEASE IN GRÜNEWALD’S BODY OF CHRIST” Wednesdays – 6:15 to 7:15 pm – April 2, 9, 16, 23 Diocesan Center - Room 308
A special book group learning experience. The Keiskamma Altarpiece is inspired by Mathias Grünewald's 16th century Isenheim Altarpiece, the centerpiece of which is the body of Christ on the cross, covered with sores associated with the "St. Anthony's Fire" plague.
The Rev. Randall Warren, Canon for Pastoral Care in the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, will be leading a book group discussion of Eugene Monick's book, "Evil, Sexuality and Disease in Grünewald's Body of Christ." Monick, an Episcopal priest and Jungian analyst, provides a Jungian analysis of Grünewald's work which we will use to discuss our own deep feelings and assumptions about sin, sex and disease ― issues with which the South African creators of the Keiskamma Altarpiece struggled.
The discussion group will meet the first four Wednesdays in April from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. in Room #308 of the Diocesan Center. You can order a copy of the book at Amazon.com (Dallas: Spring Publications, 1993 ISBN-13:9780882143569). If you have questions, contact Randall Warren at 312.751.4209 or rwarren@episcopalchicago.org
