Gardens
The gardens at St. James are green oases in the dense concrete landscape of the Cathedral District neighborhood. (The "Cathedral District" covers the 12-block area from Michigan Avenue west to State Street and from Chicago Avenue south to Ontario Street.)
Although the gardens are not generally open to the public, they are enjoyed by passers-by and are used by the Cathedral community. The gardens are maintained by volunteers from the Cathedral.
The Columbarium Garden Located along the north side of the Cathedral (on Huron Street) and nestled between the entrance to St. Andrew Chapel and the Bell Tower, the Columbarium Garden is a space set aside to remember loved ones from the Cathedral community, where the ashes of our deceased are contained in the ground.
The South Garden Directly south of the Cathedral (on Wabash), serving as the entrance to the Cathedral Counseling Center.
The East Garden Located on Huron Street between the Catheral and the Diocesan Center (65 East Huron).
The St. James Gardens Ministry is looking for a few volunteers to help us look after the gardens surrounding the cathedral. The only skill required is your willingness to work on enhancing the beauty of our cathedral for our community. Since this is a team of volunteers, we’ll work with your availability as much as possible. For more details please contact Randy Lowe at rklvt@aol.com or 773-763-3660.
