Saint James Cathedral

We had a great time in 2009. Check back in June 2010 for information about Summer in the City 2010.

JULY 6-10, 13-19, 2009
SUMMER IN THE CITY—REACH OUT AND HELP!

What do the Joffrey Ballet, s’mores, and a sail on the Tall Ship Windy have in common?

They are all part of Summer in the City at the Cathedral, our annual day camp.  It begins July 6 this year
and lasts 11 days.

Families of many campers cannot afford to pay the necessary $680 tuition. In the past six years, you have been incredibly generous with your support for camp scholarships. You have helped over 100 children experience two weeks of new friends, food, fun, and fantastic exposure to cultural activities with the city of Chicago as their campground.

Please support Summer in the City at the Cathedral again (or for the first time) in 2009.  Please give as generously as you can.  Every dollar helps.  Below are dollar figures to help you decide on donations toward camp costs:

$680 - provides one scholarship for one camper for two weeks.
$220 - covers the cost of the performing & visual arts activities for one camper for two weeks.
$110 - covers the cost of sports & excursions for one camper for two weeks.
$110 - provides meals & snacks for one camper for two weeks.
$30 - helps pay for camp T-shirts & insurance for one camper for two weeks.
$20 - covers the cost of the performing & visual arts activities for one camper for one day.
$10 - covers the cost of sports& excursions for one camper for one day.
$10 - provides breakfast, lunch, & snacks for one camper for one day.

Make checks out to Saint James Episcopal Cathedral and include “Summer in the City” in the memo line. Contributions are tax deductible!

We also need your talents during camp. Please volunteer to help serve meals or be a chaperone for one of our excursions.  For more information, contact Dean Niedenthal at 773-592-9505 or at deanniedenthal@hotmail.com

More About Summer in the City

Cathedrals have been special places of wondrous creativity throughout the centuries. They have been centers of learning and adventure, where profound discoveries are made and journeys are taken. At St. James Cathedral, we believe that young people are searching for just such adventure.

The City of Chicago and St James Cathedral have been the meeting place for young people throughout our metropolitan area for the past six Summers during our Summer in the City summer-camp program. They have the opportunity to encounter themselves and each other through the life of a great City filtered through the eyes of one of our nation’s great Cathedrals. Summer in the City allows participants to experience Chicago in a way most kids never dare to dream, in a loving and encouraging environment.

Activities and Artists-in-Residence in the past have included:

500 Clown Theatre (clown & trapeze school)
  The Joffrey Ballet (dance)
The Second City Chicago Improv Co. (writing & performance)
    Striding Lion Inter-Arts Workshop (theatre)
     Choir School
Shanti Foundation for Peace (visual arts & character education)
Street Level Youth Media (video arts)
Tai Kwon Do - Basketball - Baseball - Soccer - Sailing - Hiking
         Lots of good food!
