Cathedrals have been special places of wondrous creativity throughout the centuries, centers of learning and adventure, where profound discoveries are made and journeys taken. At St James Cathedral, we believe that young people are searching for just such adventure.

The City of Chicago and St James Cathedral have been the meeting place for young people throughout the metropolitan area for the past nine summers during our Summer in the City summer-camp program. They have the opportunity to encounter themselves and each other through the life of a great city, filtered through the eyes of one of our nation’s great Cathedrals. Summer in the City allows participants to experience Chicago in a way most kids never dare to dream, in a loving and encouraging environment.

Most families of our young campers can't afford the $830 tuition, so over the nine years, the St James community and friends have been incredibly generous with their support for camp scholarships. Your generosity has helped more than 100 children experience two weeks of new friends, food, fun, and fantastic exposure to cultural activities with the city of Chicago as their campground.

Please support Summer in the City at the Cathedral again (or for the first time) in 2010! Please give as generously as you can.  Every dollar helps.  Here's what your contribution can mean:

$830 supports a full scholarship for one camper
$415 supports a half-scholarship for one camper
$300
supports performing arts experience for one camper

$  88 supports food for one camper for two weeks
$  45
supports the cost of excursions for one camper for two weeks
$  10
supports one camper's meals and snacks for one day

You can make a donation online (click "Donate Now" and scroll down to the Summer in the City donation box) or by check made out to St James Cathedral with “Summer in the City” in the memo line (mail it in or place it in the offering plate). Contributions are tax deductible!

We also need your talents during camp. Please volunteer to help serve meals or chaperone for one of our excursions. You may volunteer by contacting Mary Wilson at maryrwilson@gmail.com.
