Crucifixus

Sunday, March 24 at 7 p.m.

The St. James Cathedral Choir sings Crucifixus: Choral Responses to the St. Mark Passion on Palm Sunday evening at 7 p.m. This devotional performance is modeled on a choral liturgy around the St. Mark Passion created by Rev. Eric Milner-White, the Dean of King's College Cambridge who devised their famous services of Lessons and Carols for Advent and Christmas. Like Lessons and Carols, the Passion story is broken into five Lessons, with each followed by a musical response.

The musical content of Crucifixus explores the daring polyphony of the late Italian Renaissance and early Baroque. In their settings of music for Passiontide, these composers pushed the boundaries of tonality for the time, crafting music that is striking, evocative, and otherworldly. This devotional program concludes with Allegri's Miserere, famous for the haunting high c sung by a solo soprano.

Choral Music:

Gesualdo - O vos omnes
Lassus - Ave verum corpus
Gesualdo - Tristis est anime mea
Lassus - Timor et tremor
Lotti - Crucifixus a 8
Allegri - Miserere

Plan your visit

When you visit St. James Cathedral during Advent and Christmas, expect to receive a warm welcome! Whether you are a committed follower of Christ, a first-time visitor who is joining a friend, or fall somewhere in between, you're not just welcome, you belong.

It is not uncommon for people to either dress casually or formally when visiting the Cathedral. Our priority is that you to feel comfortable. Children are always welcome at St. James. There is an open space to the front right of the pews for children to play under your supervision and a changing station for parents of our youngest members under the church in the restrooms.

The cathedral is accessible to people with limited mobility. An access ramp is located at the west end of the building, 65 E. Huron St.
