Sowerby: Forsaken of Man

Friday, March 27 at 7:30 p.m.

performed by the Cathedral Choir

As a special choral meditation for Passiontide, the Cathedral Choir sings Forsaken of Man by Leo Sowerby, Organist and Choirmaster at St. James from 1927-1962. Based upon the Passion narrative in the Gospel of Matthew, Forsaken of Man is a poignant oratorio that delves into the emotional and spiritual journey of Christ's Passion. Composed in 1939, the work is noted for its profound expressive depth and intricate choral writing. Sowerby, an American composer renowned for his contributions to church music, masterfully combines traditional liturgical elements with modern harmonic textures. The oratorio stands as one of his most influential works, showcasing Sowerby’s ability to convey the sacred narrative through music that resonates with both historical reverence and contemporary sensibility.

This devotional performance is part of our Sesquicentennial Celebration 2025-26.

It is not uncommon for people to either dress casually or formally when visiting the Cathedral. Our priority is that you to feel comfortable. Children are always welcome at St. James. There is an open space to the front right of the pews for children to play under your supervision and a changing station for parents of our youngest members under the church in the restrooms.

The cathedral is accessible to people with limited mobility. An access ramp is located at the west end of the building, 65 E. Huron St.
