June 08, 2017

Dean Dominic Barrington and Director of Music Stephen Buzard have announced the appointment of Mary Pan as Organ Scholar, beginning September 2017.

The Organ Scholar is a new position on the cathedral staff, intended as a learning experience for a recent graduate from a program in organ or church music, and offers an opportunity to learn the particulars of the multi-faceted music program offered at St. James. The organ scholar will hone their accompanying and conducting skills under the guidance of Director of Music Stephen Buzard  while assisting with administrative tasks.

Mary Pan is a recent graduate of the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, studying organ with Thomas Murray. She began her organ studies under the tutelage of Patricia Snyder, and is a graduate of The Hartt School, University of Hartford, where she was a student of Renée Anne Louprette. Mary is a prizewinner in numerous competitions, including the Albert Schweitzer Organ Competition and the America Guild of Organists Regional Competition for Young Organists. She is also the recipient of the M. Louise Miller Scholarship, the Yankee-Pogorzelski Memorial Scholarship, and the Peter B. Knock Memorial Music Fund. Ms. Pan has served as organist at First Baptist Church, West Hartford, organ scholar at Trinity Episcopal Church, Hartford, and Grace Church, New York City.
